E-newsletters get noticed!

There are so many benefits to an e-newsletter, but perhaps my favorite is the effectiveness of it. An E-newsletter will establish you as an expert in your field, offer credibility to you and your business, help develop loyalty among its readers, but above all that – it will get read!

Think of all the advertisements that you are bombarded with through out the day. Newspapers, magazines, billboards, sides of vehicles and buildings, television – anywhere that you might look, someone has stuck an ad! On top of that, advertising has become a science as psychologists and advertisers have teamed up to find the most effective way to grab your attention. As said so eloquently by many others, resistance is futile.

To preserve your sanity the human mind has created a barrier so that you can go through your day effectively ignoring the majority of these ads. This barrier or wall between the numerous advertisements and your consciousness makes it possible for you to focus on your task at hand and not be distracted by flashy colors, eye-catching pictures or enticing words. This “consciousness wall” has become a necessity in today’s world, and makes it difficult for an advertiser to truly reach their audience. Large corporations spent thousands if not millions in their efforts to breach this wall. The beauty of an e-newsletter is that it takes advantage of a crack…

The crack in their wall is their interest in your newsletter. They must have at some point shown interest in your content, otherwise they would not have asked to be included in your mailing list. Further, at any point of time if they lose interest in your content they can “unsubscribe”. So as long as they are on your mailing list, not only are they interested in the content, they are waiting for it. Let me restate that. Your audience is waiting for your e-newsletter because they are interested in the content. That is powerful stuff! Why?

When someone opens your e-newsletter to read its content, they have brought you inside their wall and you have their full attention. They are engaged by your content and are an audience to your message.

So now that you have their attention, what are you going to say?

Be Loud with your content, Be Loud with your message.

The power of design is the difference between good and great...

You have worked so hard to get to the point where you can “open the doors” to your business. You have learned your craft, refined it, and have either developed or are developing a reputation. With all the blood sweat and tears that got you here, don’t let a poorly designed brochure or flyer ruin it for you now.

Let me share a little story with you. I was going through the Saturday Community Newspaper and all the flyers that it contains. Like many people, this is something that I enjoy doing on a lazy weekend morning. Out falls this orange piece of paper. It has my attention so I pick it up, turn it over and CRINGE at what I see. It had my full, undivided attention. It had me, and lost it! A dentist at a local mall had sent out a single sided flyer that she obviously designed herself as a word document. Don’t misunderstand - it was not designed as a letterhead from the dentist, which could have been interesting if done right. It was an attempt to save a few dollars and create a flyer on her own personal computer. How much do you think she saved? $100, maybe $200. Let’s say she went to the most expensive designer in town and ends up paying $1000 for the design alone! How much business did she loose by sending out a very unprofessional flyer? We will never know for sure, but I will bet dollars to donuts that it was more than it would cost for the most expensive designer sitting in some Euro-Office sipping on a latte.

First Impressions are lasting. Remember that. As potential customers are flipping through the newspaper, they are actively scanning each flyer for areas of interest. 3 seconds is what you get. 3 seconds to grab the attention of the reader and entice them to give you more. 3 seconds to “make the sale”. As creative as you may be, as technically savvy as you may think you are, there are many factors that require due consideration in effective design.

Back in the 80’s there was a product which attached to a vacuum cleaner that allowed you to cut your own hair. The concept was interesting: Save money that you would spend on expensive barbers and hair stylists by doing it yourself at home. It may have cut your hair, but it really did not “style” it. Same thing happens when you design your own flyer or brochure. You may design it, but you are not really “styling” it. It may look good to you, but every baby is beautiful in the eyes of their own mother.

Flyers are not expensive, typically around a few hundred dollars. Brochures may be more expensive, but they are a vital part of your business. These are not areas that you want to cut corners – because it will show.
